Standing at the edge of the street, take a step onto the stepping stones. laid out in the narrow alleyway, and let them lead you to the back where you can find our workshop.
The long and narrow alleyway structure is called “うなぎの寝床” (Unaginonedoko) which translates to “eel bed” and this structure is unique to kyomachiya.
Marumasu Nishimuraya’s original structure is about 100 years since it was built early 1920’s. In 2000, renovations were performed to make better use of the space available and renovation took place mainly using traditional construction methods.
Come and see historical Kyoto and feel Kyoto’s charm blend into your everyday life.
Since this is Kyoto, you can have experiences unique to Kyoto, and buy items you can only buy here in Kyoto.
Here at Marumasu Nishimuraya, we offer workshops for Kyo-Yuzen and furoshiki wrapping, our shop MAYU where we sell original goods and the kyomachiya MAHORA Gallery.
Through experiencing Kyo-Yuzen, we want to spread Japanese traditional culture and introduce people from all over the world to traditional crafts.

Machiya Gallery
Mahora
Kyomachiya Mahora is a gallery for renting a very calm space with a quaint atmosphere of a machiya, with beams, pillars, floors, and warm earthen walls that make you feel the season.
It can be used as a free space for 2 days, not only for solo exhibitions and group exhibitions, but also for classrooms and exhibitions.

MARUTEZIRUSHI Shoe Studio
The small shoe studio on the way from the alley to the back is [Oike shoe studio] of Marutein shoe studio based in Yawata city, Kyoto. We are open to make custom shoes, shoe classes, and hands-on classes.
In addition, as a share factory (rental workshop), several workshops make shoes and bags and hold classes every day of the week.

Rojioku Garden 168 Cafe (Iroha)
A cafe and bar hidden away in the kyomachiya. The “Obanzai” lunch (Kyoto style meal with many side dishes) made of course with delicious Kyoto vegetables is very popular. You can spend your lunch or break time at ease here.

About us
Marumasu Nishimuraya Co., Ltd. operates the Kyoto Yuzen Experience Studio and the Kyomachiya "cocoon".
Originally founded over 100 years ago as a business of hand-painted Yuzen, we want more people to know the world of dyeing and at the same time have a memorable Yuzen experience. We have started the Yuzen Experience Studio.
At the same time, as part of the regional revitalization, we have also opened a complex facility with the Kyomachiya "cocoon" that will regenerate the declining townhouses and excite visitors.
Through the creation of unique value that can only be experienced at Marumasu Nishimuraya, all employees will strive to provide excitement and joy to as many customers as possible.

Traditional craftsman Yoshio Nishimura
Engaged in Yuzen dyeing at Nishimura Kogei Dyeing Co., Ltd., which has been in business for over 100 years.
In 1993, "Kyoyuzen Experience Studio Marumasu Nishimuraya" was launched.
In 1996, certified as a traditional dyeing craftsman by the Minister of International Trade and Industry (currently the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry).
It's been almost 30 years since I opened the experience workshop, and every time I see the customers who have experienced it happy to go home, I always feel deep emotion. We will continue to make efforts to make our customers even more happy, so please drop in at Marumasu Nishimuraya when you come to Kyoto.

Nishimura Matsunosuke Hand-Dyeing Yuzen started.

Nishimura Craft Dyeing Co. Ltd. was established.
1985,March
Yoshio Nishimura, third generation, inherits the business.
1993,April
Marumasu Nishimura is established along Nishimura Craft Dyeing and Yoshio Nishimura is president of the new company. Kyo-Yuzen workshop experience was also started.
1996,February
Yoshio Nishimura is certified as a traditional craftsman.
2000
Kyomachiya MAYU is renovated and starts operation.
